This Victorian house in Leytonstone has been extended and refurbished for a young family. The side return extension is conceived as a contemporary walled garden, with tumbled brick pavers forming the enclosing wall. This wall frames a top-lit interior and incorporates a gate that opens directly onto the garden.
Key architectural elements are given a clear expression: the roof rests visibly on the wall, while the brickwork is supported by pre-cast concrete lintels. Large folding windows and a pivot door allow the extension to be fully opened to the outside, creating a pavilion-like space that flows seamlessly into the garden.
Inside, contemporary and rustic finishes are combined to bring warmth and character throughout. As part of the bespoke fit-out, a kitchen island was designed with a striking fossilised limestone countertop, sourced and prepared in the UK.
