An existing garage and shed built in the 1980s and dairy barn built in the 1920s were extensively remodelled to create a calm flowing workplace for Tom Stuart-Smith’s landscape design studio.

On arrival the studio is at first obscured from view, a winding brick path leads visitors to a secret, sheltered garden designed by Tom Stuart-Smith Studio. Timber glazing runs the length of the garden, in places the planting is brought to the edge of the glazing so that visitors are immersed in the world of the garden as much as that of the interior.

Reclaimed tiles, Flemish bricks, corten steel and oak glazing make up the new facades of the studio. Materials were selected for their complementary relationship to the site’s historic fabric. A series of bespoke corten steel gutters was designed to subtly link the three buildings, providing visual continuity while allowing each structure to retain its individual character.

Inside, a warm, tactile environment supports both creativity and focus. Open-plan work areas are generously lit by natural light through windows and doors that seamlessly connected with oak panelling and integrated storage fostering a sense of coherence and calm throughout. Clay plaster walls in earthy muted tones make for a soft contrast to the clean lines and whitewashed ceilings.
